Michael Spence
FOR THE LOVE OF PAINTING
October 3rd- December 31st, 2025

Artist reception, Friday, October 3rd from 5:00pm-7:30pm

Join us for wine and light refreshments on Friday, October 3rd from 5:00pm-7:30pm to celebrate the artwork of local painter Michael Spence. On view will be selections from both his Landscape series and his People series. In his paintings, Spence captures the essence of Oregon landscapes and people, “expressed through composition, color and shape, not a faithful depiction but an emotional one.”

We hope to see you there!

Artist Statement:

Moving from Los Angeles to Portland forced me to rethink my subject matter and approach to painting.

After several trips to the coast, traveling along Hwy 26, I realized how beautiful and varied the farmland is surrounding the Sunset Highway. This inspired new work attempting to capture the essence of this landscape, expressed through composition, color and shape, not a faithful depiction but an emotional one.

Eventually, I decided to use these same techniques to paint people. Highly abstracted, fixated in color, shape and composition, these new paintings respect those same concerns, working with a similar palate of bold colors and loose, improvisational brushwork. I strive to be bold, energetic and to express how things feel, not how they look. Engaging with the viewer, hoping they will share my experience and emotions is most important.

About Michael Spence:

I was born in London, UK and raised in Los Angeles. As a child I was always drawing and painting. I continued my art education throughout high school. Then after three years in the military, I became interested in photography and filmmaking. I receive a degree from Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara while simultaneously taking classes at the Santa Barbara Art Institute. This was followed by a career in the film business. As retirement approached, I decided to return to painting and now paint full time.

We look forward to seeing you and providing the best in fine art picture framing; continuing in the 26 year tradition of Village Frame and Gallery!

All our best,

Adam and Vanessa
