Artist Statement:

Throughout my nomadic childhood, I found constancy and comfort in the outdoors. It is still where I go to heal and to celebrate. My observations in nature evolved through the study of science, writing, art and photography. The transition from photography to intaglio printmaking was intuitive. Initially, I chose the horse as a totem around which the themes of vulnerability and stewardship are explored. I have expanded those themes to include plant and figure studies –  drawing on memories while interpreting the shapes and textures found in the landscape.

I work on industrial copper plates with traditional methods (etching, aquatint, drypoint and spit bite). My methods are slow and purely of the hand, allowing me to languish in the creation of value and detail. I embrace the irregularities found on a plate and its edges as an evidence of my process: a note that my images are not drawings. They are worked into copper and transferred to paper in an exacting and unpredictable process. I also enjoy the contrast of thoughtfully rendered shapes on raw copper.

My prints serve as meditations on time and place. I use diptychs and grids as a visual shorthand that connects apparently disparate images into the stories of a life. The process-rich medium of intaglio printmaking offers many techniques with which to express anatomy, forms shaped by light and shadow, large forces at work and intimate moments.

My prints are held in personal collections in Canada, England and across the US.
